“What the heck is a blog, anyway?”
A blog (weblog) is simply a kind of web site. Blogs represent an easy and versatile way to publish all kinds of content – news, corporate information, analysis, commentary, informational pieces, and more.
Blogs are usually produced with blogging tools, which help you organize and publish content quickly and easily to a organized, easy-to-read format. You may have heard of some of these blogging tools – Blogger (or Blogspot), Typepad, and Wordpress are very popular examples.
Blogging tools are easy to use. I tell my clients, “If you can use a word processor like Microsoft Word, you can use a blogging tool to publish web content.” The introduction of versatile, easy-to-use blogging tools and services is what created the blog explosion of the past decade.
Just how big it this blogging phenomenon? According to Technorati, a popular blog directory, there are over 175,000 new blogs published every day. Bloggers update their blogs regularly, posting 1.6 million posts per day (that’s over 18 updates a second).
And contrary to some myths still circulating about blog, they’re not just personal diaries any more. Blogs are used by major news outlets, corporations, non-profits and individuals for a multitude of different reasons. They’re one of the best tools businesses have for marketing, and these days many, many businesses use blogs to connect with customers and extend their marketing reach.
